Learning to RAP

Thirty-nine area profile documents for Highland and Argyll and Bute, published and updated from a single pipeline, and used by local planning groups.

The task was to migrate an existing MS Word document to R, and to make it easier to maintain by creating a Reproducible Analytical Pipeline (RAP).

It originally started off as a series of numbered scripts run in strict order, and became a targets pipeline covering the transformation of the underlying data through to rendering the final documents. At each revision, the amount of post-production edits that needed to be done in MS Word by hand was reduced.

Although the pipeline is complex, colleagues who aren't experienced in R can run it from a short script and can reproduce the documents.

The topics include Demography and deprivation, Adult health and wellbeing, and Children and young people's health and wellbeing. Updated documents are in progress, but the first suite of reports are all available on the NHS Highland website.

Feedback is positive for all three current sets of documents, with a revision to the Demography profile underway.
